AI Overviews and Small Businesses: What Google Says, What We Saw

Updated 2026-10-14 · by RankRight

Short answer: Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special files or schema markup are needed. The usual SEO fundamentals apply: let crawlers in, link your pages, keep important content as text, match structured data to the page, and keep your Business Profile up to date. In six Singapore trade searches we checked on mobile, none showed an AI Overview.

RankRight writes these guides from Google's own documentation and published Singapore price guides; each figure links to where it comes from.

What Google says

Google’s page on AI features is unusually direct (Google):

  • There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimisations necessary.
  • To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in ordinary Search. There are no extra technical requirements.
  • You don’t need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup, and there is no special schema.org structured data to add.
  • AI Overviews only show when Google’s systems judge them additive, and often don’t trigger.

What still matters

Google lists the fundamentals that stay worthwhile for its AI features:

  1. Crawling allowed in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure
  2. Content easy to find through internal links
  3. A good page experience
  4. Important content available as text
  5. Images and video that support the text
  6. Structured data that matches the visible text
  7. Business Profile information up to date

Number one deserves a second look. Some hosting and security services can block crawlers at network level, before your own robots.txt is read. A site can look fine in a browser and still be closed to the crawlers that build search results.

What six Singapore searches showed

On 14 October 2026 we pulled live mobile results for six local trade searches in Singapore (DataForSEO): hair salon, aircon servicing, plumber, car workshop, pet grooming and tuition centre.

Result
Showed an AI Overview0 of 6
Showed a map pack6 of 6
Showed People Also Ask6 of 6

One snapshot, and results change daily. But for a local business it says where the customers are today: in the map pack, the ordinary results and the questions box.

What to be careful of

Services sold as “AEO” or “GEO” are not wrong by definition, but Google’s own advice on hiring an SEO suggests asking whether their advice for AI experiences lines up with Google’s official guidance (Google). If a quote charges extra for special AI files or markup for Google, the guidance above says those are not needed.

What to do

  • Check nothing is blocking crawlers, including at your host
  • Make sure every important page is linked from somewhere
  • Put prices, services, hours and areas in text, not only in images
  • Keep your Google Business Profile current
  • Answer the questions customers actually ask, on the page
